Are online notary services legal?
Yes. On August 1, 2020, the Government of Ontario introduced O Reg 431/20, Administering Oath or Declaration Remotely, under the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act. This regulation allows for remote commissioning in Ontario.
Do I need an interpreter if I do not understand the language used in the affidavit?
Yes. You will need to bring an interpreter who will take an oath or make an affirmation before us to ensure the affidavit is interpreted correctly.
What do I need for an online notary session?
You will need:
- A PDF or Word version of your document
- Access to a web camera (for example, on a smartphone or computer)
- One piece of valid government-issued photo identification
